If you enjoy wearing makeup – and you’ve been wearing it for more than 5 years – you’ve no doubt noticed that your face has changed over time and old tricks don’t have quite the same effect as they used to.

Thanks to the loss of collagen that occurs as we age, we develop fine lines and lids that droop a little more than they used to. And even for those still in their 20s, a few long nights will age your face a decade!

Luckily, Schellea Fowler of fabulous50s has a great eyeliner trick to make eyes pop without looking overdone.

The whole shebang

Fowler’s video is actually a 7-step tutorial on a full eye makeup look.

It involves using an eyeshadow primer so that makeup doesn’t crease or move around during the day, using a base shade the same color as your skin ton to even things out, applying a warm, neutral eyeshadow along the crease of the eye to add depth along with the lighter color on the lid, and then moving on to eyeliner.

It’s not as hard as it sounds and you can see the whole tutorial below, but what we’re here to teach you is her foolproof “triangle trick.”

The triangle trick

The first key to lining your eyes in a way that doesn’t accentuate fine lines is to use eyeSHADOW instead of eyeliner. A more diffuse line will do the trick without requiring perfect precision. Of course, you can certainly use a liquid liner, but if you’re practicing, eyeshadow might be the best bet.

Now, the first thing you want to do is to take your clean finger and hold the inside of your eyelid down lightly – it’s much easier to get a straight line this way!

Then, using an eyeliner brush (these are thin, specialized brushes that are worth investing in!), find the edge of your last outer eyelash and draw a tiny line upward. Just trust us here.

The next step is to come down with the liner or shadow back to the eyelid, creating a steep triangle shape, like so:

Now you’re going to fill in the triangle. Remember that your shadow or liner only goes out to the last lash and NOT the outer crease of the eye.

Can you see the little “eye lift” Fowler gave herself with that trick? It’s actually pretty impressive when you compare eyes.

The great part about this is that it lifts the eye up.

Polishing off the look

Once you master the triangle trick, you can add more color and dimension using tricks like tightlining to your eyes.

And if luscious lashes are your dream, Fowler has advice for that as well, including how to pump your eyelash curler with a tilt towards your nose to give them the perfect curl before adding mascara.

Other advice like how to apply nude eyeliner to your waterline to make eyes pop and filling in brows are included in the tutorial too.

Fowler is also kind enough to recommend specific products for those who don’t know where to start when it comes to shopping for primers and eyeshadow palates.
